Can Supplements Actually Boost Metabolism?
“Boost metabolism” is usually too vague to evaluate on its own. A useful claim should identify the measurable effect, population, dose and evidence behind it.
Metabolism is not one switch
Metabolism includes many chemical processes involved in using and storing energy. A supplement could affect one biomarker or pathway without producing a meaningful change in body weight.
Mechanism is not outcome
Claims such as “supports energy metabolism” can describe a physiological role, but they should not be silently converted into “causes fat loss.” FDA distinguishes structure/function claims from disease claims, and FTC guidance emphasizes that health advertising must be truthful, not misleading and scientifically supported.
A better way to shop
Ask: What exactly is supposed to change? How much? Over what period? Was that tested in humans? Was the finished product tested, or only an ingredient?
Apply the framework in our metabolism supplement guide.
